1kw Automatic Coupler

Detailed Description

The Valcom 10KW Antenna Coupler System, VACG-10KW, is designed and manufactured to interface with most 10KW 1.6 - 30 MHz transmitters currently on the market. The 10KW coupler control to transmitter interface is achieved through a Valcom semi-programmable universal interface port. The system is a high reliability system requiring no extensive rigging to obtain broad band characteristics. The coupler can be both automatically and manually controlled. Tuning to a new frequency can be accomplished in less than 10 seconds. Power failure protection is provided to ensure the same configuration prior to the power interruption. The coupler uses no vacuum relays and no TX RF power enters the control circuitry.

The VACG-10KW is simple to install and requires a minimum of maintenance. System diagnostics performed by the Coupler Control ensure safe operation and pin-point faults for quick correction. Only semi-annual inspections are recommended.

Tuning is accomplished using preset tuning vectors for discrete frequency bands. Fine tuning is performed using a frequency synthesizer, 10 watt RF power amplifier and RF filter unit. TX power is not required to tune the coupler. Frequency information is obtained from the transmitter. The Coupler Control displays currently tuned frequency and its associated tuning vector as well as TX forward and reflected power levels, VSWR, and system diagnostic information. The coupler tuning is performed by means of electronic control of pneumatically-operated RF switches via a serial RS-422 interface from the Coupler Control.

Display features include:

  • illuminated front panel keys
  • plasma display for displaying warning and error messages
  • forward power, reflected power
  • VSWR
  • frequency

Communications features include an RS-232C remote control channel and an optional IEEE-488 communication channel.

Other useful features of the system include: manual or automatic operation, power interruption protection and directional coupler interface.

Coupler Control

The Coupler has two modes of operation: automatic and manual. In the automatic mode, the Coupler is operated remotely by acting as a slave to the transmitter control. The Coupler Control follows the transmitter selected frequency. Coupler operation in the manual mode is used for coupler and antenna tuning of a new channel and for inspection of the coupler system.

Coupler

The Coupler is a parallel tuned resonant circuit consisting of a tuning network and the antenna radiation resistance and antenna capacitance to ground. Major tuning is accomplished by changing the transmitter input and ground tap for impedance adjustment and the antenna output tap for frequency. Minor adjustments are made by adjusting the capacitance of the tuned resonant circuit.
